Welcome to the world of La
I got a brain tumour, named it Bruno, and decided the only sane response was to fuck my way through the countdown and write every word of it down
This Substack is for the queer readers who are tired of their lives being told with gulps of hetero-normative Kool-Aid and without the nitty-gritty. I write with the whole of my experience, first-hand, with the sexy and unsexy flesh and the sexuality that helps us cope.
It is also for those who are sick and are being told to stay positive, to keep their chin up—Let us feel what we have to feel, for fuck’s sake! It is for those who perform their gender just to get good medical care; those who know that sometimes the only sane response to dying is to keep writing, keep laughing and keep fucking. And of course, for those who enjoy a good story.
Hey, I’m La! I’m a queer, non-binary author and I’m based in Madrid, Spain.
Queer Old Me
In early 2026, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour and I have never felt the need to write more than now. Creativity is flowing out of me, I have become a conduit. I always knew life was short but I’m fully understanding what that means now.
Queer Old Me is a weekly serialised literary project written in near real time. Each episode is a standalone piece and part of a larger arc. There is desire, there is grief, there is dark comedy and there is Bruno quietly nibbling away at the base of my skull while I get on with things. I write because I was unable to find anyone to guide me through this journey and I wanted a record.
Think Heated Rivalry written by someone who’s actually got their hands dirty.
With a dash of Armistead Maupin whose Tales of the City shaped me as a baby queer.
Episode 6: The seminarian — explicit content and/or family friendly versions.

Fairy Tells
Fairy Tells ran as a newspaper column for five years. It is the story of one proudly queer man navigating love and belonging while figuring out a new city.
Like Sex and the City but without the budget or the clothes.
Series 01
Episode 1: I screamed at God in my underwear and then I moved to Spain.
Episode 4: I got burnt with a cigarette, ditched and smacked in the face. Isn’t dating fun.
Episode 5: We hide at night because the world refuses to see us.
Episode 6: I didn’t debate him. I didn’t correct him. I just left.
Episode 8: (Series Finale) I didn’t go to World Pride. World Pride came to me.

I love the curation style here, and I think it just feels cohesive and brings so many things forward to anyone who wants to read the whole of it; you're handing that to them.
It is my hope that, for everyone who writes a chronology, that someone, somewhere will actually read from beginning to present instead of latest, then one from the middle, never putting all the pieces together.
la! nice to meet you, and what an opening! 💥
i love how this doesn't sand down any edges to be more palatable. introductorily embracing the full queer experience, ups and downs, sexy and unsexiness. in a way that vouches for unhampered experience. it's also really awesome to see you commit to a chronology. blunt humor that works without force.
